Research & development by Naskar Ceramic on newer materials is part and parcel of this unit and is a foot-step to advancement of their technologies. The unit has been working on fabrication and production techniques on conventional structural ceramic materials, based on alumino-silicates, Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, SiC. Recently, the unit has stressed on R&D on advanced ceramic materials, metals and composites with collaboration of Govt. Research Organizations, Universities and Industries under aegis of experienced technologists. The R&D includes both development of new materials and their fabrication techniques up to large components of any geometry. The company increased its R&D expenditure from 7% to 23% in the last 5 years.
Some of the materials currently under development for component fabrication are :
- Zirconia toughened alumina
- Magnesia
- Fused silica
- Reaction bonded silicon nitride
- Dense silicon nitride
- Reaction bonded silicon carbide
- High alumina insulation materials
Naskar Ceramic is equipped with green processing and fabrication equipments like, planetary mixer, Muller mixer, pot and ball mills, sigma mixer, 5 to 100 ton uni-axial and 50 MPa isostatic presses, 100 MPa vacuum extruders, slip casting facility, drying units and varieties of high temperature furnaces including vacuum-controlled atmosphere furnaces up to 2200oC. While test samples are prepared at home, evaluation of the materials and components are done externally.
Experimentation facilities with ceramic materials and metals are scarcely available in this sub-continent. Naskar Ceramic helps researchers to use its facilities at a nominal cost, which serves its societal commitment. Many of the universities, institutes of technology, Govt. research organizations and private manufacturing units are getting benefits using its facilities.
