Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride (RBSN) ceramic domes are used to fabricate Radomes for communications by EM waves in GHz frequency range normally used in seeker missiles as nose cones and other RF transmissions. The component is produced by slip casting high purity metallic silicon (Si) powder followed by reaction sintering in nitrogen at high temperature. The material can be operated upto 1300 °C for a long time. It has higher strength and toughness compared to SCFS. Naskar Ceramic is also engaged in production of RBSN domes of designed shapes fitted with a metal bulkhead for ready-made applications.

Typical physical properties of RBSN domes :

Maximum Dimensions : 600 mm dia x 1000 mm height
Density :  2.00 – 2.20 g/cc
Flexural strength (3pt) : 155 – 180 MPa
Dielectric constant at 8-15 GHz :  5.10 – 5.30
Dielectric loss  at 8-15 GHz :  0.003 – 0.005
Application temperature : 1300  °C
